Helping Project EZRA in Rebecca’s 4th and 5th Grade Tuesday Makom Group

On Tuesday 10/22/13, we had the privilege to do some volunteer work!  First, we learned about the importance of the Jewish concept of Tikkun Olam (“repairing the world”).  We read and analyzed a passage from Leviticus that teaches us to respect the elderly.  We spoke with Cantor Lisa and watched a Wall Street Journal video to learn about the devastation caused by Hurricane Sandy last year.  We learned that senior citizens on the Lower East Side were and are a particularly vulnerable part of the population during times of crisis.  Finally, we got to go downstairs and help the SAJ Social Concerns Committee create 100 disaster preparedness bags for Project EZRA to distribute to the elderly citizens of the Lower East Side.  We felt really good making the bags and hope they will help prevent suffering if an emergency situation strikes!  These bags will be distributed to elderly LES residents on Sunday by the 7th Grade Makom group.
